Additional Information
Oxybenzene, a common ingredient in sunscreens, has a number of issues.
- Systemic absorption: It penetrates the skin easily and enters the bloodstream. FDA studies show that even a single application can result in blood levels far exceeding their threshold of concern. Levels remain elevated with repeated use.
- Hormone Disruption: It can mimic or interfere with hormones. Animal studies link it to reproductive/developmental effects.
- Allergic Reactions: It is associated with contact and photocontact dermatitis (rashes triggered or worsened by light).
Octocrylene is another commonly used sunscreen ingredient.
- Skin Absorption: Like oxybenzone, octocrylene absorbs into the bloodstream. FDA studies show plasma levels exceed their 0.5 ng/mL threshold of concern after a single application (about 14 times higher in some data).
- Allergic and Photoallergic Reactions: It is a known contact allergen and can cause photoallergic contact dermatitis (rashes worsened by UV exposure).
- Degradation to Benzophenone: A key concern is that octocrylene can break down into benzophenone, a suspected carcinogen, endocrine disruptor, and reproductive toxicant.
Product Usage
- Apply liberally 15 minutes before sun exposure
- Reapply at least every two hours or after 40 minutes of swimming or sweating AND immediately after towel drying
